Janaza Online ("Janaza," "we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect when you use the Janaza mobile application and website, how we use that data, and what choices you have regarding your information.
We built Janaza to help Muslim communities stay informed about Janaza (Islamic funeral) prayers and services. We believe that mission must be grounded in trust — and trust begins with transparency about how your information is handled.
Overview
Janaza is a free, community-oriented mobile application available on iOS and Android. It helps users receive notifications about Janaza prayer events in locations they care about. The app does not display advertisements and does not sell your personal information to third parties — ever.
In plain terms: We collect only what we need to run the app. Your data is never sold. Your location preferences are used only to send you relevant Janaza notifications.
The scope of this Privacy Policy covers:
- The Janaza mobile application (iOS & Android)
- The Janaza Online website at janazaonline.com
- Any communications you have with us via email or in-app contact
Information We Collect
We collect the following categories of information:
2.1 Account Information
When you create a Janaza account, we collect:
- Email address — used to identify your account and send account-related communications
- Password — stored in hashed form via Firebase Authentication; we never have access to your raw password
- Display name (optional) — if you choose to provide one
You may alternatively sign in using a supported third-party provider (e.g., Google Sign-In). In that case, we receive only the profile information authorized by that provider, typically your name and email address.
2.2 Location Subscription Preferences
The core function of Janaza is location-based notifications. To provide this, we store your chosen subscription preferences:
- Zip codes you subscribe to
- City or region names you subscribe to
- Radius subscriptions — a geographic center point (latitude/longitude) and radius distance you specify
We do not automatically track or log your device's real-time GPS location. Your location data consists only of what you deliberately enter in the app's subscription settings.
2.3 Notification & Device Tokens
To deliver push notifications, we store a device push token issued by Apple (APNs) or Google (FCM). This token is associated with your account and is refreshed automatically when it changes. If you uninstall the app or revoke notification permissions, the token becomes invalid and is no longer used.
2.4 Event Interaction Data
We may store records indicating which Janaza events you have viewed or set reminders for, so the app can accurately display reminders and avoid sending duplicate notifications.
2.5 Usage & Technical Data
We may collect limited technical information to keep the service running reliably:
- App version and platform (iOS / Android)
- Device operating system version
- Crash reports and error logs (collected anonymously via Firebase Crashlytics, if enabled)
We do not use cross-site tracking, fingerprinting, or behavioral analytics platforms.
2.6 Communications You Send Us
If you contact us by email (e.g., at [email protected]), we retain the content of that communication in order to respond to you and track any reported issues.
| Data Category | Examples | Required? |
|---|---|---|
| Account credentials | Email, hashed password | Yes |
| Location preferences | Zip codes, cities, radius center | Yes (for notifications) |
| Push token | APNs / FCM device token | Yes (for notifications) |
| Event reminder records | Reminder preferences per event | Optional |
| Technical / crash data | OS version, error logs | Collected automatically |
| Support communications | Emails sent to us | Only if you contact us |
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect exclusively to:
- Provide the app's core functionality — authenticate your account and display events relevant to your subscriptions
- Deliver push notifications — alert you when a Janaza event is posted, updated, or cancelled in a location you subscribe to
- Schedule local reminders — store reminder preferences so that timely alerts are delivered on your device
- Maintain and improve the service — diagnose technical issues, fix bugs, and monitor service stability
- Respond to support requests — read and reply to emails you send us
- Comply with legal obligations — respond to lawful requests from law enforcement or regulatory authorities if required
We do not use your information for advertising, marketing profiling, or automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects.
How We Share Information
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We share data in the limited circumstances described below:
4.1 Firebase / Google
Janaza is built on Google Firebase, which provides our authentication, database (Firestore), server-side functions, and push notification delivery (Firebase Cloud Messaging). Your data is stored in Firebase data centers managed by Google. Google's use of this data is governed by the Firebase Privacy Information and Google's Privacy Policy.
4.2 Apple & Google (Push Notification Providers)
Push notification delivery on iOS relies on Apple's Push Notification service (APNs), and on Android it relies on Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM). These services receive your device push token and the notification payload (event details) in order to deliver the notification to your device. We do not control how Apple or Google process this information beyond what is necessary to deliver the notification.
4.3 Legal Disclosures
We may disclose your information if we believe in good faith that doing so is required to: (a) comply with applicable law or legal process; (b) protect the rights, property, or safety of Janaza, its users, or the public; or (c) detect, prevent, or address fraud or security issues.
4.4 Business Transfers
In the event of a merger, acquisition, or transfer of substantially all of our assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify users of any such change via email or prominent notice within the app prior to your information becoming subject to a different privacy policy.
We do not share your location subscription data, email address, or any personal information with mosques, event organizers, or other users of the app.
Data Retention
We retain your information for as long as your account is active and for a reasonable period afterward to fulfill legitimate operational or legal purposes.
- Account data — retained until you delete your account
- Location subscriptions — retained while your account is active; removed when you delete a subscription or delete your account
- Push tokens — automatically invalidated and removed when they are no longer valid (e.g., after app uninstall or notification permission revocation)
- Event interaction records — retained for up to 90 days after an event's scheduled date, then purged
- Support emails — retained for up to 2 years to track ongoing issues and legal compliance
- Crash / error logs — retained for up to 90 days in anonymized form
To request early deletion of your data, see Section 7 (Your Privacy Rights) or contact us at [email protected].
Security
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information from unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure. These measures include:
- Encryption of data in transit using TLS (HTTPS)
- Encryption of data at rest via Firebase's managed encryption
- Firestore security rules that restrict access to user data strictly to the account owner
- Password hashing handled by Firebase Authentication (bcrypt-based)
- Access to production infrastructure limited to authorized personnel only
No method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is completely secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security. If you have reason to believe your account has been compromised, please contact us immediately at [email protected].
Your Privacy Rights
Regardless of your location, you have the following rights with respect to your personal information:
7.1 Access
You may request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
7.2 Correction
You may update inaccurate or incomplete information directly through the app's settings or by contacting us.
7.3 Deletion
You may delete your account at any time through the app's settings. Upon deletion, we will remove your account credentials, location subscriptions, and push tokens from our active databases. Some residual data may remain in backups for a short period before being purged in accordance with our backup retention schedule.
7.4 Portability
You may request an export of your personal data in a structured, machine-readable format by contacting us.
7.5 Opt-Out of Notifications
You may opt out of push notifications at any time through your device's notification settings (iOS: Settings > Notifications > Janaza; Android: Settings > Apps > Janaza > Notifications). You can also manage or remove individual location subscriptions within the app to stop notifications for specific areas.
7.6 California Residents (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) to know what personal information we collect, to request deletion, and to opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information. To exercise other rights, contact us at [email protected]. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your CCPA rights.
7.7 EEA / UK Residents (GDPR)
If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA) or United Kingdom, you have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or UK GDPR, including the rights to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and to object to processing. Our lawful basis for processing your data is contractual necessity (to provide the app's services to you). To exercise your rights or lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority, contact us at [email protected].
Children's Privacy
Janaza is not directed to children under the age of 13 (or 16 in certain jurisdictions). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at [email protected] and we will promptly delete such information from our systems.
Third-Party Services
Janaza uses the following third-party services to operate. Each has its own privacy practices:
| Service | Purpose | Privacy Policy |
|---|---|---|
| Google Firebase Authentication | User account management | firebase.google.com/support/privacy |
| Google Firestore | Cloud database for events & subscriptions | policies.google.com/privacy |
| Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) | Android & cross-platform push notifications | firebase.google.com/support/privacy |
| Apple Push Notification service (APNs) | iOS push notifications | apple.com/legal/privacy |
| Google Maps / Geocoding API | Location name resolution for subscriptions | policies.google.com/privacy |
We do not integrate advertising networks, social media tracking pixels, or third-party analytics platforms (such as Mixpanel, Amplitude, or Segment) in the Janaza application.
Push Notifications
Push notifications are the core way Janaza delivers value. When a new Janaza event is posted, our servers send a notification to devices subscribed to the relevant location. The notification payload typically contains:
- The event title (e.g., "Janaza Prayer")
- The event date, time, and location name
- A deep link to open the specific event in the app
Notification permissions: On iOS and Android, we request your permission before sending push notifications. You may grant or revoke this permission at any time through your device settings. Revoking permission will stop all push notifications from Janaza.
Local reminders: In addition to server-triggered push notifications, the app may schedule local on-device reminders (e.g., "2 hours before" or "morning of" an event). These reminders are stored on your device and do not require an internet connection to fire. Local reminder data stays on your device and is not transmitted to our servers beyond the reminder preference you set.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or for other operational reasons. When we make material changes, we will:
- Update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page
- Send a push notification or in-app notice to active users
- In the case of significant changes, send an email notification to the address associated with your account
Your continued use of Janaza after the effective date of a revised Privacy Policy constitutes your acceptance of the updated terms. If you do not agree with the changes, you should stop using the app and may request deletion of your account.
